COVID-19 situation in Lithuania is not getting better

 "A variant of the new coronavirus identified in South Africa, according to some researchers, may be less sensitive to COVID-19 vaccines. 

 Until now, it has been established in Lithuania that the British strain of coronavirus is spreading rapidly, which is more contagious and patients are more likely to die from it. 

"I have to say with regret that there are really a lot of cases, the number of cases has increased significantly. A strain of the virus of the Republic of South Africa in Lithuania has also been identified, which means not only a faster spread, but may also mean certain challenges for vaccination,” the Head of Government told reporters in the Seimas on Tuesday. She stated that two cases of the said COVID-19 South Africa strain had been confirmed and that a number of other suspicious cases remained."  

 The African strain can also be dangerous for those who recovered from this disease caused by other strains.  

"Epidemiologist Gytis Dudas says the South African strain is one of the 'current concerns.' According to the expert, the genetic information indicates that there is an increased risk of re-infection with this strain if a patient recovered from other strains or have been vaccinated with currently registered vaccines."
