U.S. News: Trump Hails Pennsylvania Tech Hub

“PITTSBURGH -- Some of the world's biggest companies pledged tens of billions of dollars to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence in Pennsylvania, the latest splashy investments to draw praise from President Trump.

 

Google said it would put $25 billion into data centers needed to train AI models and related infrastructure in Pennsylvania and the surrounding region during the next two years. Private-equity firm Blackstone promised another $25 billion. AI startup CoreWeave announced a $6 billion investment.

 

Power companies FirstEnergy and Constellation Energy are part of a group pouring billions more into increasing electricity generation in the area, according to the White House.

 

Trump touted the new investments in comments at an AI and energy summit on Carnegie Mellon University's campus in Pittsburgh on Tuesday afternoon. "We have the hottest country, and we're going to keep it that way," he said.

 

The commitments are part of a campaign to transform the Steel City and surrounding areas -- a key region in this battleground state -- into a tech hub. Trump carried Pennsylvania in the 2024 presidential election. Amazon.com committed $20 billion to similar projects in the region last month, a sum not included in Tuesday's figures.

 

Tech companies are crisscrossing the country making similar investments, hoping to keep the U.S. ahead of China in the AI race. Some are seeking federal funding or permitting assistance by appealing to the president, who has made onshoring critical industries a priority. Tech giants and investors have announced more than $1.5 trillion in domestic infrastructure projects so far in Trump's second term.

 

Tuesday's announcement includes an emphasis on producing the power needed to run data centers given Pennsylvania's position as a leading energy producer. The tech industry is expected to gravitate to parts of the country and world with the most data centers and suitable power infrastructure. Executives from Google, Meta Platforms and software firm Palantir attended the event.

 

Increasing power generation is expected to be a focus of Trump's plan to lead the world in AI, which is slated to be released next week, according to people familiar with the matter. The AI action plan, as it is officially called, will likely discuss accelerating permitting for tech-infrastructure projects. Trump spoke Tuesday about his desire to speed permitting across the country.

 

Tuesday's event was organized by Sen. Dave McCormick (R., Pa.), a former hedge-fund executive who invited many of the world's biggest investment firms.
