"Alexander
Lukashenko threatened to cut off gas to Europe on Thursday as gas travels in
transit from Russia's Yamal-Europe gas pipeline. It is not a bluff, but a real threat,
informs LNK.
According to expert R.Švedas, the interruption of gas supplies through Belarus would even benefit the
Kremlin. "Why? Because Belarus supplies
a lot of gas to the European Union in transit. If that supply were to be cut
off, the energy crisis in the European Union would only intensify. This is good
for the Kremlin, as the Kremlin is now putting pressure on the European Union
to launch the Nord Stream 2 project. Because Nord Stream 2 is not yet certified
and licensed. It is built, but not yet turned on," - said the expert. The Kremlin would blame Belarusian President Lukashenko for
the problems. "In this way, there would be no sanctions for non-performance
of the contract. So, in my opinion, it is really real," - R. Švedas said.
How important is
this Yamal Europe gas pipeline to the European Union and who would suffer the
most? "The pipeline has a capacity of about 33 billion cubic meters a
year. By comparison, let's say Germany consumes about 90 billion and the
European Union as a whole about 400 billion. This is quite a significant and
large amount. Countries such as Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia would
be affected. So that is actually a fairly effective tool. Here, one could
immediately refute the argument that Russia would not do it anyway, because
since gas should flow in transit to Kaliningrad, but in fact Russia has already
ensured Kaliningrad's energy autonomy, i. y. made it possible for Kaliningrad
to function independently. Now transit through Belarus and through
Lithuania to Kaliningrad is no longer necessary for Russia as well, " - the
expert commented on the situation."
It turns out that the actions of Lithuania ruled by
Landsbergis family in attacking the Belarusians are beneficial for Russia. Who do
Landsbergis family serve?
