U.S. Unveils Services Portal Powered by AI

“WASHINGTON -- The Trump administration has built a tool powered by artificial intelligence that its developers promise will serve as a "concierge" to the federal government, as it attempts to modernize the relationship between citizens and the state.

 

It will be housed at a website called America.gov, setting up a test for the Trump administration's digital ambitions.

 

"Instead of forcing citizens to search through the endless maze of tens of thousands of terrible government websites," President Trump said at a Tuesday event launching the website, "you'll now have one front door for every single question."

 

Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb and head of the White House's National Design Studio, said the online portal will function as a new digital front door to the federal government. He said the technology -- in time -- will serve as the final destination for all federal constituent services.

 

Renew a passport or start Medicare enrollment. Reserve a federal campsite or check on the status of federal student loans. Eventually, all of those tasks, and more, Gebbia said, can be started and completed, on America.gov.

 

The goal is to provide a single, streamlined platform, Gebbia said during a preview of the America.gov launch for The Wall Street Journal, rather than leaving individual citizens to navigate myriad agency websites on their own. He said the technology will link and make all federal information immediately searchable online. "You search," he said of the kinds of tasks that eventually can be started and finished at America.gov, "and you never go back into the maze."

 

Though an ambitious idea, it isn't a new one. Beginning with the Clinton administration in the early days of the internet, each administration has tried to create a one-stop-shop portal to the federal government. But the digital footprint expanded instead. The Obama administration estimated in 2011 there were more than 24,000 government domains.

 

"It's the first idea that everybody has," said Mikey Dickerson, a former Google engineer who helped reset HealthCare.gov after its disastrous rollout. The first administrator of the United States Digital Service, he recalled conversations with then-President Barack Obama about why the federal index of websites was so confusing, fragmented and voluminous.

 

But creating a single platform that does more than simply index links to government websites becomes nearly impossible, Dickerson said, because of the numerous federal agencies and the distinct definition of basic criteria they employ. The Internal Revenue Service and the Agriculture Department, for instance, he said, treat income differently in their application of the tax code and administration of food stamps. To create a truly one-stop shop for the federal government, he said, would require lawmakers to write new legislation, not just computer code.

 

America.gov will be powered by two AI agents -- Grok and Gemini -- that will allow users to issue tasks and ask questions in plain language. Every government website will immediately be made searchable, developers said, while full integration of certain government services is expected to begin in a matter of months.” [1]
