1. "To the Editor:
Thank you, Paul Krugman, for saying this, and for reminding me of that wonderful word “monopsony.” Many believe that Amazon is siding with the public by driving down the prices that publishers can charge for books. But it isn’t. What it’s doing is making it uneconomical for publishers and authors to give us the professional works of fact and fiction that we take for granted, in favor of its own low overhead self-publishing model — a model that produces mostly rubbish. There are many reasons that most writers stick with publishers, including advances, editing and publicity.
This isn’t about competition — any author is currently free to self-publish on Amazon, and any reader to read his or her books. Rather, it’s about Amazon’s attempt to use its monopoly power and vertical integration to destroy competition and force everyone into its model, one that would make impossible the professionally written and edited books upon which our cultural life depends.
I invite anyone who thinks that Amazon is doing us a favor to read a random sampling of self-published books sometime. You will soon change your mind.
