Supercomputers Can't Compete With Humans

“The proponents of artificial intelligence described in "AI Doom? No Problem" (Review, Oct. 4) ignore the critical and ultimately determinative advantages of biologically based human computing.

One is the energy efficiency of the human brain, which is 1,000 times as energy efficient as a supercomputer. Another is that human brains are fashioned from completely renewable biological materials, unlike computers and robots, which are built from iron, silicon and other minerals whose extraction requires yet more energy.

The current mania for supercomputers, AI, superintelligence and the like is driven by the availability of cheap energy, mostly afforded by fossil fuels. When these run out, wind and solar will struggle to fill their place thanks to the high cost of natural materials, which will grow more dear as their supplies also dwindle. In the long run, the winner will be human "wetware," which thrived before the fossil-fuel bubble and will do so long after it bursts.
