Farmers Open Fields to Poles. Saving the "Harvest Disaster"

"The "harvest disaster" observed in agriculture this year has led to an increase in the popularity of self-harvesting. This direct form of selling agricultural produce has enjoyed enormous popularity in recent days, and many Poles are searching for information about it online.

Self-harvesting involves farmers or fruit growers making their plantations available to consumers. They, in turn, harvest the fruit or vegetables grown there for their own needs, which they then pay for. This type of transaction benefits both sellers and buyers. It should therefore come as no surprise that the phrase "self-harvest" has been frequently searched for by internet users in Poland in recent days.

Self-harvesting is enjoying interest among Poles

According to Google Trends analyses, interest in self-harvesting among internet users peaked on Saturday, October 4th, and has steadily increased since then. It peaked on Thursday, October 9th, after which it began to decline. However, it remains higher than before October 4th.

Poles searching for information on this form of sales most often enter the phrases "self-harvest 2025" and "self-harvest peppers." Furthermore, analyses show that internet users are looking for information about self-harvest events in specific voivodeships. Alongside the phrase "self-harvest," they most often add the names of voivodeships such as Masovian, Lublin, and Silesian, and recently, increasingly, Lower Silesian.

Why are many farmers in Poland announcing self-harvest events?

The growing interest in self-harvest events is due to the current situation in agriculture. Many farmers decided this year to announce this direct form of sales on their plantations, especially peppers, tomatoes, onions, cabbage, and apples.

This is due to difficulties in selling many of their fruit and vegetable crops, which was caused by the "harvest failure." This was influenced by many factors, including:

oversupply (large quantities of crops) and imports, which led to lower market prices;

low prices at procurement centers, which often don't even cover the costs of cultivation, making harvesting itself unprofitable;

an unfavorable geopolitical situation;

difficult weather conditions.

For many farmers, self-harvesting, in the face of a "harvest failure," is the only solution to limit losses. They manage to obtain a higher price for their crops than at the procurement center. At the same time, they don't incur the costs of hiring employees, storing the crops, or transporting them. Furthermore, the vegetables and fruits growing on their plantations don't go to waste.

Self-harvesting has recently enjoyed significant popularity among consumers. There are several reasons for this phenomenon.

The prices of products harvested directly from plantations or orchards are also significant factor, as they can be much lower than those at markets or in stores. Customers also appreciate the freshness and quality of the goods purchased this way and the ability to independently choose from a large selection of products.

Some consumers emphasize that they use self-harvesting to support local farmers in the face of the market crisis. Some value this form of direct sales because it aligns with the trend toward a healthy lifestyle and prevents food waste. Still others view self-harvesting as an opportunity to spend quality time outdoors with family and friends.
