"Ms Cichanouskaya, who is considered by some Lithuanians to be the leader of the Belarusian opposition, is proposing to strengthen sanctions because it seems for her that the Belarusians themselves want it. But Belarusians do not agree on this, it is not clear what percentage of them would like to get rid of the Lukashenko regime, what percentage support Lukashenko regime and what percentage have no clear or consistent vision about it, or just want to live in peace quietly.
Sanctions will be tougher, but not as severe as the Lithuanian authorities want. Speaking at a joint press conference with Šimonytė last week, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg said that we needed to speak with Russia in two directions: "we need deterrence, defense, but also dialogue." It means that NATO does not fully support the radical attitude of Šimonytė and Lithuania towards Russia, and therefore Belarus."
