Our Moonshot Moment on AI

Artificial intelligence isn't another productivity tool; it's the fastest labor-market disruptor in history. As Walmart's CEO Doug McMillon warned, "AI is going to change literally every job." This shift will affect the workforce more than any economic transformation since the computer and internet revolution ("Walmart CEO Issues Wake-Up Call on AI," Page One, Sept. 29).

The good news: Many major companies are stepping up -- investing in AI technologies, training programs and change management to help their employees adapt. But at a time when the wage gap has begun to widen again, low-wage workers are at risk of missing out on what could be a historic opportunity for economic mobility if they don't have access to training and support.

Where do we start? The answer isn't to build a new system; it's to leverage and upgrade the networks we already have to reach people where they live. Across the country, community-based training and employment programs operate at neighborhood scale and reach most Americans.

Every year, Goodwill helps 200,000 people with job services. Working with public and private organizations, our company is ready to help lead this transformation. Leadership requires national will. This is our moonshot moment. If we get it right, we won't merely protect jobs -- we'll create pathways to opportunity and secure America's future.
