China beats the rest of the world in patents on generative AI

"Artificial intelligence is electrifying the world. New applications are coming onto the market every day. One country beats all in patent applications.

The topic of artificial intelligence (AI) has led to a veritable explosion of patent applications from China. In the field of generative AI, more patents have been filed every year from China since 2017 than from the rest of the world, as reported by the UN Intellectual Property Organization (Wipo) in Geneva. Over a period of ten years, Germany was in sixth place in the ranking of the most patent applications in this area.

With generative AI, users can produce text, images and other content based on training data. Examples are AI applications such as ChatGPT or Gemini.

China: 38,000 patents

In the ten years up to 2023, companies and institutes from China have filed more than 38,000 patents in the field of generative AI, according to Wipo. The USA was far behind with 6,300, followed by South Korea, Japan and India. Great Britain was in fifth place with 714, closely followed by Germany with 708. According to Wipe, however, more patents have been filed in Germany in recent years than in Great Britain.

The fact that the field is booming is also shown by the development of patent applications worldwide: from 2014 to 2023, according to Wipo, there were 54,000 patent applications in the field of generative AI, but more than a quarter of these came from last year alone. "Generative AI has emerged as a groundbreaking technology that has the potential to change the way we work, live and play," said Wipo Director General Daren Tang.” [1]
