The main problems with cancer treatment are resistance and metastases. Cancer cells develop treatment resistance and the ability to form metastases with time, since the longer tumor cells try to survive in the challenging and diverse environment of the human body the more they are selected to survive those very many challenges. As a result this also leads to their ability to survive the challenges posed by contemporary cancer treatment and the ability to adapt to new environments in metastatic sites.
This is how in time treatment resistance and the ability to form metastases develops. Imaging of metastatic lesions or their absence in usual metastasis sites, like liver, are a significant factor in estimation of probability and longevity of cancer patient’s survival. Therefore detecting cancer earlier and treating cancer earlier reduces the risk of treatment resistance and metastases’ development and saves lives. The harsh side effects of some treatments and invasiveness of some cancer tests should not discourage the patients from doing the right thing early enough.
