"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared LabCorp's mail-in Covid-19 test for use without a prescription on Wednesday, marking the first authorization of a direct-to-consumer test kit.
The test enables any individual aged 18 or above to self-swab a sample and ship it to LabCorp for analysis without signoff from a medical provider. It is currently available online, and the clearance also enables the company to potentially distribute the kit in retail stores.
LabCorp's kit had previously been authorized for at-home sample collection with a doctor's prescription and was available to order online, similar to other at-home collection kits available on the market.
Out of pocket, the test costs $119 with a credit card."[1]
