OpenAI is establishing a robotics team again

"OpenAI wants to develop AI models for robots again and is establishing a new robotics team. The focus is on collaboration with manufacturers, a job advertisement shows.

After more than three years of inactivity, OpenAI is setting up a new robotics team. It is an attempt to develop AI models for companies that want to build intelligent robots.

The company dissolved the original robotics department in 2020 due to a lack of progress.

OpenAI is currently recruiting research engineers for the new robotics project. A job advertisement states that the newly hired employees will be among the first members of the team. At the end of May, Forbes first reported on OpenAI's plans, citing three sources, and that the project was launched about two months ago.

According to the job advertisement, OpenAI's robotics team will focus on developing multimodal Large Language Models (LLMs) that are specifically designed for robotic applications. By integrating language models, robots can respond to different types of inputs, such as sensor data or voice commands, and thus interact more intelligently with their environment.

Collaboration with robotics manufacturers

According to Forbes, OpenAI is focusing this time on collaboration with existing robot manufacturers rather than relying on competition, and wants to develop technologies that manufacturers can integrate into their own systems. Experience in collaboration with external partners is cited in the advertisement as a prerequisite for the new position at OpenAI.

OpenAI already presented an AI system in 2017 that enables robots to learn through demonstrations. Engineers were able to teach the system new tasks by demonstrating them with a virtual reality headset. In this way, robots learned, for example, to solve a Rubik's Cube.

Through the collaborations, Open AI is solving a problem that, among other things, led to the closure of the former robotics department: the company said it lacked the necessary training data for further development.

Over the past year, OpenAI has invested in several companies developing humanoid robots, including Figure AI, 1X Technologies, and Physical Intelligence.

The Figure 01 model is based on OpenAI's large multimodal models and can now interact with its environment and perform tasks using voice control.

With the revival of the robotics team and the new strategic direction, OpenAI is further advancing the use of AI in robotics and is attempting to gain new influence in this industry." [1]
