Green methanol is produced from biomass or green electricity: Hapag-Lloyd orders green methanol for ships in China from Goldwind

"HAMBURG. The shipping company Hapag-Lloyd is securing an initial amount of green methanol in order to be able to operate some ships in a more climate-friendly way than before.

The Beijing-based company Goldwind is to supply 250,000 tons of green methanol annually in the long term.

This would save up to 400,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year, explained Hapag-Lloyd. Measured against the total emissions of Hapag-Lloyd's fleet, this would be a saving of just over 1.5 percent.

From the perspective of Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen, the supply agreement is an important step on the way to a "net zero fleet operation", which the Hamburg shipping company has set itself the goal of achieving by 2045.

By 2030, the fleet's greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by a third compared to 2022. Hapag-Lloyd is working on several fronts. The Hamburg-based company recently announced that it had ordered 24 container ships with liquefied gas propulsion, which may one day also be powered by ammonia. The methanol delivery now agreed is planned, among other things, for five charter ships that Hapag-Lloyd, together with the ship owner Seaspan, has converted so that they can be powered by methanol or marine diesel.

"It is and remains our clear aim to play a leading role in the transformation of liner shipping," Hapag-Lloyd quoted Habben Jansen as saying in a statement.

Globally, shipping accounts for almost three percent of CO2 emissions. In the summer of 2023, the industry association IMO (International Maritime Organization) agreed to reduce CO2 emissions to zero by "around the year 2050".

The supply of green methanol is still very low worldwide. Hapag-Lloyd says it is trying to find additional suppliers. Goldwind, known primarily as a competitor of Siemens Gamesa and Vestas in the offshore wind turbine business, wants to build a methanol factory in China by the end of 2027 to supply Hapag-Lloyd. From 2026 onwards, a first delivery will come from an existing factory. Green methanol is produced from biomass or green electricity." [1]
