"A
frivolous question is popular in public space these days: will there be
war? However, it is not easy to answer it. Seriously, we need to
consider: and what are we doing to keep it out of our yard? We pursue a
comprehensive deterrence policy, monitoring and taking into account the
capabilities of potential opponents, analyzing their quantity and power,
and putting our puzzle of our capabilities accordingly.
Generally
speaking, if there are a lot of tanks in the neighborhood, we buy even
more anti-tank weapons, and so on. But imagine what if we stopped
developing our capabilities? After all, a potential adversary is also
watching us and stating: if they don’t have adequate firewalls, then
we’re driving and driving away, occupying them for those 24 or 72 hours,
as is often escalated today. However, the deterrence policy does not
allow any myths to exist for about 24 or 72 hours because the potential
opponent sees and realizes that no 24 hours will suffice. And 24 days
will not be enough.
It would be a long, fierce and bloody clash. Without winners."
This
is what our minister of defense is saying. He is not a military man. He
is a historian. He forgot Smetona's history. Smetona and the military kept
power in Smetona's Lithuania. Money for the military was good. This did
not lead to an expected long, fierce and bloody clash. Sorry to
report you - when the adversary showed up, no one shot was fired.
Unpopular overfed Smetona's military went to the history's trash pile.
Who does not know the history, is going to repeat it.
