Liberal G. Nausėda has stripped G. Steponavičius of his award, who was convicted in a corruption case

 

 

"President Gitanas Nausėda has stripped Gintaras Steponavičius of his state award, who was convicted in a corruption case of the "MG Group" (formerly "MG Baltic" - BNS).

 

The decree signed on February 24 states that G. Steponavičius has been removed from the list of awardees, having humiliated the name of the awardee.

 

The former politician was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order "For Merit to Lithuania" in 2004, in recognition of his contribution to the process of Lithuania's accession to the European Union.

 

At that time, G. Steponavičius was a member of the Seimas Deputy Chairman, Member of the European Affairs Committee.

 

However, in October last year, the Supreme Court of Lithuania recognized in the MG Group political corruption case that the former MP and former Minister of Education had abused their position without any signs of bribery. He was fined more than 15 thousand euros.

 

According to the law, the president can remove individuals from the list of awardees if their activities degrade the name of the awardee.

 

Individuals removed from the list of knights of orders or recipients of medals and other distinctions must return the awards and award documents presented to them to the Chancellor of Orders.”
