After Napoleon and Hitler

“Regarding "Mit Hängen und Würge" [By the Skin of Our Teeth] by Berthold Kohler (F.A.Z., Dec. 20): I read this late at night and was appalled. Entangled in the war as followers of the USA—that is, as accomplices—and now left like "Kevin Alone" [Home Alone] near the front lines, we, Germans, together with Western Europe, blithely storm onward with another 90 billion euros.

We remain blind to the political bond between Russia and Ukraine that has existed since the early 18th century—interrupted only briefly during the phase of the Soviet Union's decline.

After Russia’s humiliation as a mere "regional power," after NATO’s eastward expansion, and after the infiltration of American and British advisors into Ukraine, alarm bells were bound to ring in Russia—especially given that Putin’s 2001 offer of European cooperation also fell on deaf ears.

What happens if, in two years’ time, those fresh 90 billion have also been squandered without Russia having given up?

Anyone who truly wished to defeat Russia would have had to go "all in," rather than merely providing weapons and advice as an outsider.

But after Napoleon and Hitler, any other Western European, too, is bound to fail; thus, one prefers to sacrifice Ukrainian blood—harboring the subconscious knowledge that the approved billions merely prolong the dream of a "final victory" at the expense of a population that is, by now, suffering beyond measure.” [1]
