Gabbard Says Iran’s Regime Is Still Largely Intact

“Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard told the Senate Intelligence Committee the Iranian regime has been degraded but remains largely intact.

In a written statement she didn't read out loud, Gabbard said Iran hasn't tried to reconstitute its nuclear-enrichment program since the U.S. and Israel bombarded three Iranian nuclear sites in June.

Iran's ability to project power largely has been "destroyed, leaving limited options," she said. Sanctions and previous attacks on Iran have seen Tehran's "strategic position significantly degraded."

"If a hostile regime survives, it will seek to begin a yearslong effort to rebuild its missiles and [drone] forces," she said.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt earlier said President Trump has confidence in Gabbard, whose aide Joe Kent, who headed the National Counterterrorism Center, was the first senior official in Trump's administration to resign over the conflict, saying Iran posed no imminent threat to the U.S.

Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe told the Senate committee that Iran posed an "immediate threat" to the U.S. before the war began, saying U.S. intelligence assessments showed the regime hadn't reined in its nuclear ambitions or desire to build ballistic missiles that could threaten U.S. troops and allies.

"Iran has been a constant threat to the United States and posed an immediate threat at this time," Ratcliffe said.

Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, on Wednesday said there are no indications that Iran has moved highly enriched uranium from its major nuclear facilities that were attacked in June. He said this material is mainly at Isfahan, and some quantity is at Natanz as well.

Iran informed the agency shortly before the June strike that it was planning a new enrichment facility, which is underground at Isfahan, and agreed to provide access to international inspectors, he said. But the inspectors were evacuated after the strikes, and no inspections were allowed before the war began in February.” [1]
