"The researcher spoke about this in a discussion organized
by the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) on Friday entitled"
Amateurs? Why is "value foreign policy" reminiscent of chaos?".
"It seems to me that the problems of Lithuania's
foreign policy did not start today, not yesterday and not a year ago. It seems
to me that this is a ball that has been accumulating for many years, decades of
weight, gaining critical mass only in recent years, when virtually any real
foreign policy and diplomacy has been replaced by some rhetoric, political
postures and, I would say, even anger." - said A. Kasparavičius.
According to him, some of the former goals, such as stopping
the construction of the Astravo nuclear power plant, have had the opposite
effect.
"Perhaps it is not a good
thing, because if we recognize that Lithuania's foreign policy
is moral, then we should also acknowledge another very obvious and even more
sad fact - that Lithuania's allegedly moral foreign policy in the last 15 years
has yielded practically only negative results", - commented A.
Kasparavičius.
He also identified dual government as a negative aspect of
foreign policy - disagreements between the government and the president.
"I had to talk to our foreign colleagues, that's what
everyone sees. He sees that stretch left and right. The result seems to me to
be very sad - the "Balkanization" of Lithuanian foreign policy, said
A. Kasparavičius, the head of the Lithuanian Institute of History.
A. Kasparavičius also offered an idea.
"It seems to me that today it would be worthwhile for
the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Seimas and the President to
start a certain audit of Lithuania's foreign policy. Perhaps I would recommend
hiring experts from Switzerland or other non-interested countries to simply try
to calculate the costs and results of Lithuania's foreign policy since 2004,
"said the researcher.
To his knowledge, such audits were carried out several times
between the wars.
"It seems to me
that this is a certain problem. Problems are accumulating, they are not solved
and we have a snowball effect," - said A. Kasparavičius."
