Zuckerberg announces general AI - as open source

"Mark Zuckerberg wants to develop a general artificial intelligence that is as smart as a human - and then make it available to all users.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that he will develop general artificial intelligence (AGI) and then make it available to everyone as open source software. This AI should reach the intellectual level of a human. “It has become clearer that the next generation of services will require building comprehensive general AI,” Zuckerberg said in a Threads video. "Developing the best AI assistants, AI for creatives, AI for businesses, and more requires advances in all areas of AI, from thinking to planning and programming to memory and other cognitive abilities." However, Zuckerberg left it open when Meta wants to reach this level.

Zuckerberg's announcement stands in sharp contrast to the opinion of his own AI boss Yann LeCun, who recently said general AI is still "decades away", while NVIDIA boss Jenson Huang expects such levels of AI in the next five years. For LeCun, Huang's opinion is nothing more than protecting his business interests. "I know Jensen. There is an AI war, and he is providing the weapons. If you think AI is fashionable, the more GPUs you have to buy," LeCun said. The highly decorated Frenchman has been leading AI research at Meta since 2013 and is considered a level-headed voice in the heated AI scene.

Computing power like Microsoft

But that doesn't stop Meta from investing billions in hardware and training the models. By the end of the year, the company will have built up the computing power of 350,000 NVIDIA H100 chips, Zuckerberg announced.

Only Microsoft has similarly high computing power.

With this enormous computing power, Meta will continue to train its Llama 3 language model.

The current Llama 2 model is also open to all users and is considered one of the most ambitious open models, which could even pose a threat to closed models such as Open AI's GPT-4.

The performance is still a little lower, but Zuckerberg's video sends a message that we should not be satisfied with this position.

AI in glasses

Zuckerberg believes that AI and the metaverse are closely linked. Smart glasses are the way most people will experience AI and the metaverse together. “Many of us will be talking to AI all day long,” he said. "I think many of us will do this using glasses, because glasses are the ideal form factor for making an AI see what you see and hear what you hear." Meta has developed glasses together with Ray-Ban."
