As lifespans grow, work time while healthy lags

"The gap between average life expectancy and the number of years people are healthy and on the job is widening, with potentially grave consequences for pensioners.

Several European countries plan to raise the pension age as a result of anticipated increases in life expectancy. But research in England predicts that in coming decades, people will gain years of life much faster than they will gain years of life when they’re healthy and in work.

Marty Lynch at Keele University, UK, and her colleagues sought to estimate future changes in life expectancy and healthy working lifetime — the period that individuals spend in paying jobs and without health conditions that limit their activities. To predict trends in both, the team examined data on mortality, health and work collected from people aged 50–75 in England between 1996 and 2014.

The researchers project that from 2015 to 2035, men will gain 3.37 years of lifespan, but only 0.38 healthy working years. In women, life expectancy is expected to rise by 2.46 years, including 1.08 healthy working years.

The authors say that as pension age climbs, measures should be taken to close the growing gap between pension age and years of healthy working life." [1]
