"The National Security and Defense
Committee (NSGK) of Lithuanian parlament, which considered the conscription reform, decided to support
the proposal to conscript young people right after school. The committee also
decided to support the original idea of the Ministry of National Defense (KAM)
to refuse the possibility of postponing service for students studying in higher
education institutions.
The National
Security and Defense Committee (NSGK), which considered the conscription
reform, decided to approve the proposal to conscript young people immediately
after school. The committee also decided to support the original idea of the
Ministry of National Defense (MND) to refuse the possibility of deferment of
service for students studying in higher education institutions.
Minister of National Defense Laurynas
Kasčiūnas, who spoke at the beginning of the meeting, said that he supports the
proposal not to call up students currently studying in higher education
institutions for military service. However, the committee decided to only
partially approve such a proposal of Artūras Žukauskas, chairman of the
Education and Science Committee (ŠMK).
As previously
announced, ŠMK, which submitted its conclusion about a month ago, proposes not
to interfere with the already ongoing study process, but to call up young
people after school with only a few exceptions: postponing the service for
particularly gifted students, athletes and artists.
"After
graduating from school, a student must know that he is already on the draft list
and, with very few exceptions, he would be drafted (...) Not all students will
have the opportunity to serve in one form or another during their studies, and
because of this we would have many conflicts." We propose to take after
school with a very small group of exceptions", said A. Žukauskas at the
NSGK meeting.
NSGK members who
opposed it claimed that applying these exceptions would create social exclusion
among young people.
The committee
also did not agree with the proposals of the Lithuanian Students' Union,
Vilnius University, and the Vilnius University Students' Representative Office
not to call the students of higher education institutions who are currently
studying.
As previously
announced, in December of last year, the Seimas approved the reform of
mandatory initial military service prepared by the Ministry of Defense, which
aims to increase the number of conscripts and speed up the training of the
active army reserve.
Unlike before,
the new amendments to the Law on Military Conscription do not provide for the
possibility of postponing compulsory service - those enrolling in higher
schools or colleges would also be called up. However, students could choose
whether to serve in the Junior Officer Command Training (JKVM) or in the
National Defense Volunteer Force (KASP) on weekends. Students would have the
opportunity to pause their studies and perform the usual 9-month mandatory
initial military service.
ELTA reminds that
one of the fundamental changes foreseen in the conscription reform is the
possibility of shortening the service period. As before, conscripts would be
called to serve for a period of 9 months. However, it is expected that, taking
into account the needs of the Lithuanian army, the period could be shortened to
half a year, and young people who have acquired the relevant specialties could
be invited to serve for 3 months.
The package of
amendments to the conscription law also provides for the conscription of
18-21-year-old young men - it is proposed to call 18-19-year-old boys to serve
immediately after graduating from school.
In the future, we
will discuss the conscription of women
As the Lithuanian
Business Confederation emphasized that the conscription reform lacks greater
inclusion of women, NSGK promised to return to this issue in the future.
The chairman of
the committee, A. Pocius, emphasized that this topic has not been widely
discussed yet. This opinion of the chairman was seconded by all committee
members.
"There are
many restrictions, but NSGK will have to look more broadly and strive for
universality. We can record these comments and we will be able to examine the
proposal of the business confederation", said the "libertarian"
Vytautas Mitalas at the meeting."
The professionally trained Palestinian Hamas forces showed that they kill Israeli volunteer forces like sheep. This is not Lithuanian elite's problem. The Lithuanian elite remembered the decision to their own problem.

come to the Mountain”.
If the
conflict does not and will not go from Ukraine to Lithuania, then all
Lithuanian youth, including girls, have to go to the Ukrainian trenches to warm the
bodies of the losing members of Zelensky's army. The exception is those
Lithuanian men and women whose relatives stole enough to pay the most expensive
tutors and so they all can call themselves the most talented.
