“BYD wants to alleviate its customers' so-called range
anxiety. With a new system, an electric car battery can be charged in five
minutes – for a range of up to 470 kilometers.
The Chinese automaker BYD has introduced a new fast charging
system for electric cars that delivers enough energy for hundreds of kilometers
in just a few minutes. The so-called "Super e-Platform" offers a peak
power of up to 1,000 kilowatts and can charge an electric car battery for a
range of up to 470 kilometers within five minutes. BYD presented the technology
on Monday evening, and the company's shares subsequently rose significantly on
Tuesday morning.
With the new charging system, the so-called range anxiety
should become a thing of the past, as company founder Wang Chuanfu explained.
"Our goal is to make the charging time for electric vehicles as short as
that for vehicles with combustion engines," he said. By comparison,
Tesla's Superchargers have a capacity of 500 kilowatts.
BYD introduced the Super e platform along with two new
models that will be the first to be equipped with the system: the Han L sedan
and the Tang L SUV. The company also announced the construction of more than
4,000 ultra-fast charging stations in China.
BYD once again massively increased its sales figures in
February, while Tesla's sales slumped in the Chinese and other markets. The
price of BYD shares, listed in Hong Kong, rose by more than six percent on
Tuesday morning.”
