Ghost hunting of the fifth column in Lithuania

Member of the Seimas, elder of the “Nemunas Dawn” faction Remigijus Žemaitaitis

“In their time, these were people loyal to Russia, because it was relevant. There are such people now – a former Conservative is being tried for spying for Russia. However, these are dinosaurs, atavisms of the system – I am not saying that all Conservatives are now Russian agents. The real fifth columnists are much more committed and they do not linger on the margins. They imitate concern for Lithuania and, it seems, are very afraid of the disclosure of the lists of KGB collaborators. Most often, the “fifth column” is sought by the state’s destroyers themselves – those political cats who have pooped into flour.

So, you can call me a fifth columnist if you collect five percent of the gross domestic product for defense. I honestly say – I do not see such a possibility mathematically yet. You can also call him a Putinist and a Kremlinist if the Lithuanian sanctions really harm Russia, or maybe even boost the Lithuanian economy. The Polish ones will definitely boost it. Alas, that would be loyalty to another state, doesn't Poland count because it's ours?

The real fifth column

In my opinion, the real fifth columnist today is the one who wastes himself on unfounded accusations of treason, loyalty to another state. Why does he do this? Because it destroys the state from within. Those who spread fear of war without reason are also like that - they paralyze society and the economy.

After a secret session of the Seimas, the Speaker of the Seimas announces that a fifth column is forming in the Seimas! And he orders everyone to declare themselves as traitors within two weeks. Otherwise, they will be dismissed from various important committees. But they will not be dismissed from the Seimas. Interesting? Why is this paranoia not based on facts and evidence? Who needs them - the intimidated public will eat it anyway. And what are the special services doing? Maybe the handcuffs are difficult to buy? Or maybe someone here needs a straitjacket?

So, the European Union (EU) buys oil products from Russia for 22 billion euros, and allocates 19 billion to Ukraine - for defense against Russia. When I proposed to allow fertilizer transit through Lithuania and allocate part of the income to Ukraine - I am a Kremlin supporter and a fifth column. And how does the EU behave?

When I and my comrades support sanctions against Russia, but abstain because the only point that raises suspicions - beneficial to our neighbors and harmful to Lithuania - we are the fifth column. Yes, it looks ugly, but at least we attracted attention. It would certainly be more solid if we had wisely corrected the sanctions and had a nice unanimous vote that would not give food to the mouthpieces of the Russians.

Wait - to the mouthpieces of the Russians? It seems to me that it was our influencers, not Russian ones, who were the ones who got the hang of it and made so much noise about this topic that a few days later the republican media started talking about it. These are influencers operating in our country and supported by someone who diligently carried out destructive work instead of the Kremlin's Solovievs.

I sincerely believe that it was the fifth column that destroyed Lithuania's foreign policy. The simplest example is that we are preparing to increase excise taxes on fuel again starting next year. And our closest neighbors will reduce them. The difference in the price of a liter of fuel can reach 27 euro cents. This is a very big difference, which will cause people to go abroad en masse for fuel. We will lose hundreds of millions, not collect them. Who came up with such a methodology for destroying Lithuania? Is it the rescuers of Lithuania or the fifth column?

A smokescreen of values

The real fifth column is now diligently spreading fears and rumors about a real estate tax, which – I am convinced – will be very humane. Maybe even too much. Okay, Raimondas Kuodis recently said in an Orwellian way that three billion could be taken from Lithuania’s “livestock farm” for defense. What he meant was that tax collection is very focused on every ordinary resident of the country, and not on those who actually spend millions. Maybe because in this farm, legislators and cream lickers are too closely connected?

I have no doubt that the real “fifth column”, which is officially respected and loudly promotes values to everyone, also bathes in the cream of the top of our “livestock farm”. Don’t think that they are running around in sweatpants and cotton wadding coats. They wear great suits and are very welcome on state television. So, in the face of raising funds for the country's defense, they plan to splash millions on a television building so that the channel that supports them will feel more comfortable? They want to deepen the Neris River so that Vilnius residents can be evacuated in case of war? To what direction? They reserve billions for anything - except defense. I understand that we need to live now, but maybe it would be a little more sensible to balance expectations with reality?

No, we'd better announce the search for the fifth column in the Seimas hall and splash the money where we need it? Disloyalty to some proposals of some government figures can even be a very strong loyalty to Lithuania. Haven't the ghost hunters of the fifth column thought of this?

Let's open our eyes

A little more about loyalty. Lithuanian people already know a little about the shadowy Russian oil fleet and that tale about the detained ships - supposedly, that's it, we blocked them. There is always a report about some suspicious ship that was not allowed to enter somewhere and is now drifting. Is the whole world now without oil?

You just have to open your eyes and see the numbers that are quite easy to find. In February, Russia's monthly fossil fuel export revenues fell by 3 percent compared to the previous month, to 640 million euros per day. The five largest EU countries importing Russian fossil fuels paid Russia 1.3 billion euros for imports, more than half of which was liquefied natural gas (LNG). Russian crude oil and its products were exported by 356 ships in February, of which 167 were so-called "shadow" tankers.

The shadow fleet was supposedly exposed and in fact decreased by 21 percent. But did the transportation of Russian oil by ship decrease? Only a little, because now oil is transported by ships owned or insured by the G7+. Over the same period, the flows of these ships increased by 15%. Such changes are only beneficial for Russia - the cargo will always reach the addressee, the ship will not be confiscated.

Let's calculate. In February, Russia's income from LNG increased by 13% - to 52 million euros per day. And the volumes increased by 9%. I wonder if our LNG terminal is choking on Russian gas? After a drop in January, Russia's income from pipeline gas in February increased by 5% - to 70 million euros per DAY. Pipeline gas export volumes also increased by 1%.

The EU was the fourth largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels - its imports accounted for 14% (1.7 billion euros) of the five largest buyers. Almost half of these imports were Russian LNG, worth 861 million euros.

France was the largest importer of Russian fossil fuels to the EU. Its imports, including Russian LNG, amounted to 399 million euros. However, the fact that this gas is imported through France does not necessarily mean that it is consumed there. A recent study shows that some of the Russian LNG entering France through the Dunkirk terminal is supplied to Germany.

So, our allies themselves are arming Russia and offering protection from it. The icing on the cake is that money is flowing to Russia, while great love and support for Ukraine are declared. Does the value cloud hide the truth?”
