It's Not Just About Nord Stream

“Regarding "The main thing is that Nord Stream is destroyed" (F.A.Z., October 9): I am following with increasing dismay how the investigations into the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines are going nowhere. Now Poland is also refusing to extradite the detained suspect, Volodymyr Z., to Germany – and Prime Minister Donald Tusk publicly declares that "the problem is not the bombing, but the construction of Nord Stream 2." This statement is more than a provocation; it is a slap in the face for Germany and for the principle of the rule of law.

The bombing of the Nord Stream pipelines was not a "political statement," but a serious crime against German property and against Europe's energy security. Germany had every sovereign right to build the pipeline. The project was legal, approved, and internationally coordinated.

If an EU member state now suggests that an attack on infrastructure was "understandable" or even "justified," that is a dangerous breach of principle: Then political expediency is being placed above the law. The fact that both Poland and Italy are refusing to extradite suspects, despite European arrest warrants, is a clear violation of the common European legal order. Germany must not simply accept this.

The German government must – regardless of party political considerations – insist, through Eurojust and the EU Commission, on compliance with the rule of law. If European partners refuse to cooperate, infringement proceedings must also be considered. It's not just about Nord Stream.

It's about the question of whether Germany and Europe are prepared to place the rule of law above political expediency. If we give that up, the damage to our democracy will be greater than any explosive device in the Baltic Sea.” [1]
