Cheap organ replacement will extend most of human lives in the future.
“FRANKFURT. Doctors have for the first time transplanted a pig liver into a living human. It was intended to support his liver, which was damaged by hepatitis B. The 71-year-old patient lived for 171 days after the transplantation, according to doctors at Anhui Medical University in Hefei, China. In the journal "Journal of Hepatology," they report that the organ functioned for 31 days. Then complications arose, requiring its removal on the 38th day. The man continued to live with his own damaged liver. Until now, pig organs have only been transplanted into brain-dead individuals. This new case offers hope that pig livers could at least function as a temporary bridge until a human donor liver is found.” [1]
