Every year, more and more young people are avoiding compulsory service in the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

"It is often hoped that there will be a variety of excuses, but those who try to do so will suffer severe criminal prosecutions and a record number of such cases last year - 118.

According to the data of the Departmental Register of Criminal Offenses, a total of 140 cases have been initiated under Article 314 of the Criminal Code since the resumption of compulsory conscription. - evasion of service. Most of them started last year.

It is true that the figures provided by the Lithuanian Armed Forces in Delphi are slightly different. It is indicated here that last year the Military Police applied to the Prosecutor's Office 92 times, last year - 3 times, and in 2019 initiated 46 pre-trial investigations.

True, evading military service does not have to be immediately explained to the court. In the first place, they are subject to administrative fines twice, and only then, if they do not continue to attend the medical examination or to the designated place of service, the last measure is taken - prosecution of young men as criminals.

"The most common explanation is the financial obligations you have, the job you already have, the reluctance to lose your qualifications. Also, I just simply "don't want to go to serve." They know both that they are on the lists and receive repeated summons instructions both by registered mail and email, but still do not arrive,” - the army commented.

    Receives convictions and fines

The courts usually impose fines of around a thousand euros on young people who evade the service. However, even after receiving convictions, the boys are not relieved of their service - they still have to perform their duty to the homeland.

Delphi has written many stories about young people avoiding service.

It is not uncommon for emigrants who are not even going to return to Lithuania.

"I've been living abroad in the UK for about 8 years now," said one of those convicts, who explained that he had a well-paid job at Amazon and wasn't even going to serve. - I didn't even think to check these lists, and that my name was included in them, I only found out when I returned to Lithuania - my mother said that a message had arrived at the house from the post office. When I left, I picked up the letter - it was a summons to come to the Telšiai Conscription and Staffing Subdivision. I realized I was being called up for compulsory military service, but I didn’t even call there. The next time I returned to Lithuania, I went to the Telšiai Conscription and Staffing Division, here I was drawn up the minutes of administrative offenses, the fines imposed, which I paid. ”

There are more interesting cases among those who avoid the army, for example, one guy explained that he was afraid of blood and weapons, even though he dreamed of becoming a firefighter or a policeman.

He said that after graduating, he acquired the profession of a logistics forwarder and intended to work in the specialty, but still could not find a job.

"Then I registered with the Employment Service, but I didn't get any job offers either, so I didn't get a job anywhere," -  he said. - After a while, I thought it would be appropriate for me to retrain - for example, to be able to work as a civil servant and get a job guaranteed. I was thinking about the profession of firefighter or policeman, and the army didn't suit me because I was afraid of blood and weapons. "

It can be done in several ways

The Lithuanian Armed Forces reminds that those who wish to serve can choose not only the Permanent Compulsory Military Service, which lasts for 9 months, but also another - the training of the commanders of junior officers, which takes place on weekends.

In addition, at least 3 years of service in the Cost Protection Volunteer Force with active participation in KASP exercises and training is counted.

"So conscripts can choose the way that suits them," the army said.

It is also important to know that timely execution of summons instructions does not yet mean appointment to perform the service.

"There are a number of steps that need to be taken before being appointed: all you have to do is contact the Military Service and Staffing and provide your contact details, then set a date for a medical examination and only then if the conscript is fit for health. military service, in descending order of the number assigned to the list in the calendar year, the conscript shall be appointed to perform the service.

In addition, we remind you that failure to perform military service may be subject to both administrative and criminal liability, and we therefore suggest that you do not avoid or be afraid to perform the service," - the comment said."

It turns out that notorious procedure of losing the Lithuanian citizenship after acquiring the citizenship of another country if done in timely fashion is the easy way for men to get rid of Lithuanian compulsory conscription procedures:

"According to emigrant Giedrius, in his current situation, applying for British citizenship and "completely renouncing Lithuania" becomes the only way for him to avoid military service and not lose his job and pay.

And would giving up Lithuanian citizenship really help Giedrius avoid responsibility? The representative of the conscription and recruitment service notes that upon receipt of official information that a person has lost Lithuanian citizenship, the procedures for conscription would indeed be terminated. However, it points out that administrative or criminal liability would continue to apply as the offenses or offenses would have already been committed."
