Ukraine: if you see yourself in a pit you are digging yourself, it's time to stop digging that pit

By pushing Russia into an alliance with China, we are weakening the West, on which all our security is based. We are cutting the branch we are sitting on. Why? Many of us have enriched ourselves when we survived the collapse of the Soviet Union. Now we see more riches in Belarus and Moscow. These riches attract us. It is a short-sighted policy to taste cheese in the mouse trap, as the most prominent American political scientists have said.

"Legendary U.S. politician and political scientist H. Kissinger, now 98, delivered his opinion on May 23rd. during a conference in Davos, Switzerland, at the World Economic Forum, according to businessinsider.in.

Under Richard Nixon's presidency, Kissinger was responsible for a strategy to ease tensions with China. He is also one of the most prominent proponents in the world of the so-called real politics, in which countries disregard moral norms and principles in pursuit of their goals.

"Negotiations must begin in the next two months before there are tensions and unrest that will not be easy to overcome. Ideally, the dividing line should be to restore the status quo ante,” said Kissinger.

"Further military action would no longer mean a struggle for Ukraine's freedom, but a new war with Russia," he added.

The former U.S. secretary of state has pointed out that Russia has been an important part of Europe for 400 years, helping to balance the power structure at crucial times.

According to him, the West should not push Russia into closer relations with China.

"I hope that the Ukrainians will show wisdom equal to their heroism," he said, adding that the most appropriate status for Ukraine was a neutral buffer state, not a fully integrated part of Europe.

Speaking at the forum, the former secretary of state said that the idea of maintaining Ukraine's neutral status and turning the country into a "bridge" between East and West no longer exists.

"Eight years ago, when Ukraine's deliberations on joining NATO appeared, I wrote an article in which I emphasized that it would be good for Ukraine to remain in the group of neutral countries that would become a bridge between East and West. But now the idea has ceased to exist," he said.
