Facebook is becoming a Meta, according to the "metaverse" version

Facebook Inc. has officially announced that it is changing its name to Meta, emphasizing the goal of turning the world's largest social network into a so-called "metaverse" company.

Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a virtual live conference on Thursday that the new name reflects an effort to create a new virtual space, not just a social media service.

"Currently, our brand is so closely linked to one product that it can in no way represent everything we do today, let alone the future," he told Reuters.

The company introduced the new sign in California, replacing its thumb logo, which symbolizes the emotion "like", with a blue infinite shape sign.

VŽ wrote that at the end of July, the head of Facebook announced plans to turn his company into a "metauniverse", or digital world. Other companies are already trying to implement this futuristic idea, for whom the platforms they create bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.

Metaverse is a digital world where people can play, communicate, spend money or work. The meta-universe is often understood as the next stage in the evolution of the Internet, and the gateway to it would be virtual or augmented reality equipment.

In 2014, Facebook for 2 billion USD has acquired VR equipment maker Oculus and has since developed the Horizon project, a digital space where people can communicate using virtual reality technologies.

In August, the company introduced the Horizon Workrooms system, which allows coworkers wearing VR devices to hold meetings in a virtual room where they are all depicted as 3D animated characters.

According to meta-universe enthusiasts, the Internet is already beginning to blur the line between virtual and "real" experiences.

The technology giant says the change will bring together a variety of applications and technologies under one brand. However, the company will not change its structure.

Mr Zuckerberg said the new name reflected that over time, users would not need to use Facebook to use the company's other services.

The rebranding of Facebook coincides with criticism from lawmakers and regulators in several countries about the company's power in the global market.

Facebook's troubles began this fall when Frances Haugen, a former Facebook data analyst, revealed data that Facebook is not taking steps to reduce the use of harmful content for profit."
