"Russian media
have reported that the Russian military is currently testing remote-controlled
tanks (RTKs), including a trophy Ukrainian T-72AMT tank named Vasia," Army
Recognition reports.
The initiative
involves modifying existing equipment to incorporate remote control
capabilities, marking a strategic step toward integrating unmanned military
vehicles, such as the Uran-9 and T-72B3 Sturm, into remotely controlled military operations. In a
video shared on Russia's Telegram channel, the T-72AMT tank is operated by a
two-man crew: one takes care of the movement and maneuvering of the tank, while
the other controls the weapon system using equipment that is usually FPV
(first-person view) in drones.
Remotely operated
tanks could provide several strategic advantages to Russian forces in Ukraine.
By reducing the need for human operators in high-risk environments, these tanks
reduce personnel exposure to frontline battle conditions, thereby conserving
manpower and reducing casualties.
This advantage is
especially valuable when carrying out reconnaissance missions in dangerous or
unknown areas, increasing the security and effectiveness of reconnaissance operations.
Integrating remote-controlled tanks with other unmanned systems, such as
drones, allows for a more coordinated battlefield strategy. This interaction
between air and ground systems improves target acquisition and operational
efficiency. Equipped with advanced technologies such as automated turrets and
precision-guided munitions, remotely piloted tanks can perform a variety of
roles from direct combat support to logistics tasks, making them a versatile
tool for military operations.
In addition, remotely
piloted tanks are a cost-effective solution in protracted conflicts as they
reduce the logistical burden associated with human crews. They can conduct
long-term operations even in the face of heavy enemy fire or in dangerous
environments, thus ensuring continuous operational capability.
These advantages make
remotely controlled tanks a valuable asset for Russian forces supporting
long-term military campaigns in Ukraine."
