"WASHINGTON -- President Trump said Palestinians wouldn't have the right to return to Gaza under his new plan to rebuild the territory, adding that they would get "much better housing" instead in neighboring countries.
"In other words, I'm talking about building a permanent place for them because if they have to return now, it'll be years before you could ever -- it's not habitable," Trump said in an interview with Fox News's Bret Baier conducted before Sunday's Super Bowl.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters last week that any relocation would be temporary, and that taxpayers wouldn't cover the cost of developing the territory.
Asked by Baier if displaced Palestinians would have the right to return to Gaza, Trump said, "No, they wouldn't."
Trump's proposal to take long-term control of Gaza, unveiled as he stood beside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a news conference, has already caused some discord within the Republican Party. Several GOP lawmakers have expressed skepticism.
Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar have rejected evictions, while the Palestinian Authority and Hamas said they wouldn't support an evacuation of Gaza. The president plans to raise his Gaza proposal during an expected meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah at the White House on Tuesday, an administration official said.
Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday that he would "maybe" consider withholding aid from countries that decline to take Palestinians leaving Gaza.
In the Fox News interview, Trump also appeared to suggest that Gaza would belong to him and compared it to a real-estate project.
"We'll build safe communities, a little bit away from where they are, where all of this danger is," he said. "In the meantime, I would own this. Think of it as a real-estate development for the future. It would be a beautiful piece of land. No big money spent."
On Air Force One on Sunday, Trump told reporters the U.S. would own it. "It'll be reclaimed," he added. "It'll be leveled out, fixed up."
The White House didn't respond to a request for a comment on whether the president would personally own the territory or if Palestinians would be permanently displaced.” [1]
Why do Palestinians get such treatment? Since they proved that they can fight. Two millions fighting and making such a ruckus? This is inconvenient for bigger countries. We have in reality about two million people in Lithuania also. If we get too many weapons, start conflicts around us, we might get moved to very nice remote places too. Previously Lithuania might have become Riviera in the Baltics region. I have my doubts, but if at least one person in Lithuania has diplomatic talent, that person should think about diplomacy, not a war, in our place on the Earth. Craziness with arming ourselves and messing up life for others should stop now.
