A pandemic accelerates the development of disparities between countries

"The Black Death, a pandemic caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis that spread across Asia, Africa and Europe beginning in 1346, was “without question the most catastrophic health crisis in recorded history,” Mark Bailey, a historian and the author of “After the Black Death: Economy, Society, and the Law in Fourteenth-Century England,” said in an interview. In England, it killed around 50 percent of the population in 1348 and 1349; in Europe as a whole, estimates range from 30 to 60 percent. The sheer scale of mortality was an enormous shock, though its effects went far beyond that. As Monica Green, a historian of medicine who specializes in medieval Europe, put it, “Who will bring in the harvest if half the people are gone?”

Different societies responded in different ways. In many parts of northwestern Europe, such as Britain and what is now the Netherlands, the sudden death of a huge share of working people meant it was easier for the survivors to get work and acquire land. “You get an increase in wealth per head and a reduction in wealth inequality,” Mr. Bailey explained. Economically, at least, “ordinary people are better off.”

The reverse was true in much of eastern Europe, where lords consolidated their power over the now-scarce peasantry to reimpose serfdom, forcing them to work the land on terms favorable to landowners. There, inequality flatlined or actually increased in the wake of the plague.

There are many competing explanations for the split, but one possibility is that “the Black Death tends to accelerate existing trends,” like a movement toward a less feudal, more consumer-based economy in northern Europe, Mr. Bailey said. But that region didn’t magically become a bastion of equality post-plague — the English government imposed wage caps in the mid-14th century to keep pay from going too high. The result was widespread unrest, culminating in the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, which brought together people of a wide variety of social backgrounds in an expression of “pent-up frustration” at government mismanagement of the economy, Mr. Bailey said.
Over all, if “resilience in a pandemic is coping,” he continued, “economic and social resilience subsequently is adapting.” The modern lesson: “Adapting to the new reality, the new paradigm, the new opportunities, is key.”"

Microsoft will make augmented reality headsets for the Army

"U.S. technology giant Microsoft will develop a customized version of the HoloLens augmented reality device for the U.S. military. The company has signed a contract with the U.S. military to produce 120,000 augmented reality devices for $ 21.9 billion a decade.

The standard version of HoloLens costs $ 3,500 and allows people to see holograms integrated into the real environment, as well as control them with gestures or voice commands. Most of this device is sold by Microsoft to companies that associate it with special applications.

Some of HoloLens' users are architectural companies, universities, hospitals, automakers or the US space agency NASA. The device for the U.S. military would be used by ground forces soldiers. The system would allow army commanders to project information on a panel in front of the soldier's face, as well as other features such as allowing soldiers to see in the dark, Bloomberg writes."

This was known in Lithuania until today, on the fourth day of April. Additional information has now appeared in the Western press:

"Microsoft said Wednesday that it would begin producing more than 120,000 augmented reality headsets for Army soldiers under a contract that could be worth up to $21.9 billion.

The HoloLens headsets use a technology called the Integrated Visual Augmentation System, which will equip soldiers wearing them with night vision, thermal vision and audio communication. The devices also have sensors that help soldiers target opponents in battle.

The devices will “provide the improved situational awareness, target engagement and informed decision-making necessary” to overcome current and future adversaries, the Army said in a news release.

In 2018, Microsoft won a $480 million bid to make prototypes of the headsets. The Army said Wednesday that the new contract to produce them on a larger scale was for five years, with the option to add up to five more years."
You ask, why do we not have such technologies in Lithuania? You know, our Landsbergiai-led “elite” isn’t catching up on how to get rich with it. And when buying golden spoons for forcefully collected conscripts, the Landsbergiai enrich themselves perfectly. This was shown by the scandalous story with Landsbergiai controlled Nota bene.

Amazon apologizes for urine bottle tweet

"The logistics group Amazon has admitted that employees urinate in bottles - because there is not enough time or there are no toilets on delivery trips.

Amazon has now apologized for a tweet in which the group has denied this. "That was an own goal, we are dissatisfied with it, and we owe MP Pocan an apology." With these words starts the apology that the logistics company Amazon addressed to Democratic MP Mark Pocan on Friday. It's about a tweet the company posted on March 25th: "You don't really believe this pee-in-the-bottle thing, do you?" Amazon responded to a tweet from Pocan, who wrote: "Paying $ 15 an hour doesn't make you a progressive job if you fight unions and let your employees pee in water bottles."

There had been strong reactions online to this tweet from Amazon. Because there is actually evidence that Amazon employees, especially suppliers, but also employees in the logistics centers have too little time to go to the toilet and therefore pee in bottles. A journalist from “Buzzfeed” posted service instructions online after the tweet: Drivers of a delivery company that works for Amazon were called on not to leave “urine bottles” in their delivery vehicles after the shift. And the portal "The Intercept" published internal documents of an Amazon manager who writes that bags with "human feces" are not tolerated in the delivery centers.

The logistics group is now rowing back in the statement: “Firstly, the tweet was wrong.” The many drivers were disregarded and instead falsely focused on the employees in the logistics centers. "Second, our process was flawed." The tweet had not been adequately checked. "Thirdly, we know that drivers can have problems finding a toilet." That could be due to traffic or routes in remote regions and is especially the case in the pandemic. This is an industry-wide problem that they are trying to solve.

Under the apology, Amazon then lists a number of articles that report on drivers for the taxi service Uber or the logistics giants UPS or DPD who also urinate in bottles."

The dream of Lithuanian and Ukrainian nationalists came true - a five-year-old Russian died, according to reports, from an explosive device brought from a drone in eastern Ukraine

"According to local media reports, a five-year-old boy was killed and his grandmother seriously injured when a bomb exploded near Donetsk on Saturday. The explosive device is said to have been thrown into the courtyard of a family house with a drone."
