How to Save Money Using AI Agents to Perform Work for You? Mac Mini Shortage Is Due to AI Zealots

 

This is the future of computer use. This is also a death signal for Anthropic and OpenAI. No money for them. You go, China.

 

“The rise of AI agents turned a niche Apple product into a sleeper hit. So why can't anyone buy a Mac Mini right now? It's the perfect storm of supply and demand.

 

The Mac Mini made up only about 3% of Apple's Mac unit sales in the U.S. last year, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.

 

But in the past six months or so, it has become the must-have host for private, "always-on" artificial-intelligence agents, such as OpenClaw.

 

The Mini has no screen, just computer guts and ports. The littlest Mac has gone viral as a cost-effective way for AI power users to run local large language models that can eat up dozens of gigabytes of RAM, aka memory.

 

Running such software directly on a machine helps these people avoid usage quotas from cloud-based providers.

 

The unexpected demand is apparent on Apple's own website.

 

Mac Minis with larger-capacity RAM chips -- a base M4 model with 32GB of RAM, starting at $999, and the M4 Pro models with 64GB of RAM, starting at $1,999 -- are "currently unavailable" on Apple.com.

 

And estimated shipping wait times for any other Mini model start at about a month, and in some cases is up to 12 weeks. (This Mini scarcity extends to other retailers as well.)

 

The more powerful Mac Studio makes up an even smaller share of sales than the Mini -- less than 1%, according to CIRP. But its high-memory configurations ($3,499 and up) are also unavailable, and more affordable variations show wait times of up to 12 weeks.

 

Last month, Apple removed the Mac Studio's mega upgrade -- 512GB of RAM -- which it had touted as "the most ever in a personal computer."

 

Meanwhile, Apple can ship its most popular computer, the MacBook Pro, with 128GB of RAM ($5,099 and up) to your door in early May. MacBook Pro models with less RAM ship sooner, and almost all other Mac models we reviewed on Apple.com will arrive just days after they're ordered.

 

Apple declined to comment on what's happening with these AI-friendly systems, but analysts have three theories:

 

Undercalculated demand

 

The leading hypothesis is that demand simply exceeded supply.

 

"Apple was caught up by the number of people buying Minis for Clawdbot [aka OpenClaw], which would have been impossible to predict a few months ago," said Francisco Jeronimo, vice president at research firm IDC.

 

"The lead times on supply are longer than one might think," said CIRP co-founder Michael Levin. The Mac Mini is a niche device, he added: "Apple also doesn't want demand to wane suddenly and have a year or more of inventory sitting around."

 

An overdue update

 

When new models are coming, it's common to see availability taper off on current machines. The current Mac Mini, with M4 chips, came out in October 2024, while Apple released new Mac Studios in March of last year. Desktop Macs with the latest M5 chips -- already in the current MacBook lineup -- are overdue.

 

While unexpected Mac Mini demand is still the likeliest scenario, Apple could be managing inventory ahead of its next product cycle, said Counterpoint's senior analyst Minsoo Kang.

 

Kieren Jessop, principal analyst at Omdia, notes that a normal prelaunch "stockout" usually shows reduced availability across all configurations, not just high-memory ones -- more support for the likelihood of unanticipated interest.

 

Memory scarcity

 

AI companies' appetite for RAM chips to build out data centers has led to a worldwide shortage. The crunch has already affected PC and smartphone sales this year, according to IDC.

 

However, the iPhone maker has plenty of chip-buying clout. And since it builds its RAM directly into its Mac chipsets, it isn't buying from the same exact supply pool as the AI-focused customers, says Jessop.

 

Besides, he adds, if Apple were short on chips, we'd see "disruption across a much broader slice of the Mac lineup."

 

Jeronimo concurs: "If Apple can't get memory, no one else will."

 

My hunch? It's a convergence of all of the above.

 

It's also a signal to buyers to proceed cautiously. If the Mac you want is currently shipping in 10 to 12 weeks, you might want to hold off -- new ones could be coming soon.” [1]
