“The Seimas and World Lithuanian Community Commission has
prepared a resolution proposing recognizing the preservation of Lithuanian
citizenship acquired at birth as a matter of national security.
“It
(Lithuania – ELTA) especially needs as many civic, patriotic and active
citizens as possible, whose voice would be heard in the states that are
Lithuania’s strategic partners, because only those who have the citizenship of
those states are heard in them. More than a thousand Lithuanian citizens
continue to lose their Lithuanian citizenship every year after acquiring the
citizenship of another republic,” – commission member Tomas Girnius presented
the resolution at a press conference.
“Only citizenship is a full-fledged, constitutionally
established connection of a citizen with the state, encompassing not only
rights but also duties: to defend Lithuania, to perform compulsory military
service. It is important to recognize the preservation of Lithuanian
citizenship acquired at birth as a matter of Lithuanian national security,” he
emphasized.
As announced, this week the Seimas and World Lithuanian
Community Commission examined Lithuanian diaspora policy issues in parliament.
Members of the Seimas, the World Lithuanian Community, representatives of
various institutions and organizations, experts and the public were invited to
the meetings.
ELTA reminds that the referendum held in early May 2024 on
the amendment to the Constitution, which sought to expand the possibility of
dual citizenship, was not successful.
According to
the CEC, 1 million 413 thousand 288 voters or 58.96 percent participated in the
referendum. The amendment to the Constitution on the preservation of
citizenship was approved by 1 million 26 thousand 408 voters (74.13 percent),
but this number of votes was not enough to adopt the amendment.
In order for the amendment to the Constitution to be
adopted, at least half of the population with the right to vote must vote for
it.
The referendum held in Lithuania in 2019 on the preservation
of citizenship also suffered a fiasco.”
This is a
strange fiasco: the majority votes for dual citizenship, but there is no
communist unanimity of the nation. So many years have passed since the times of
communism in Lithuania, but we still cannot get rid of communist methods of
governance and the elite does not stop stealing. The elite that creates such an
order simply openly mocks, but asks us to defend their stolen wealth.
