"By May 10, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had received reports of 1,359 hospitalizations for COVID-19 or deaths in people fully vaccinated against COVID-19," CNN reports.
By May 10, 115 million people were fully vaccinated against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
Of the 1,359 acute COVID-19 cases that occurred despite being vaccinated, 223 resulted in the death of those infected.
1,080 cases of infection despite vaccination occurred in people aged 65 or over.
Data on this comes from 46 US states.
CDC treats as breakthrough cases those when the infection occurs at least two weeks after the infected person receives the second dose of the vaccine (for the Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna vaccines), or two weeks after receiving the Johnson & Johnson single dose vaccine.
The CDC admits that the number of such infections is likely to be underestimated and that the data is incomplete, but it allows "patterns" to be established.
"Breakthroughs happen in a small percentage of those who are vaccinated," writes the agency. "To date, we have not noticed any unexpected patterns (such infections) in terms of demographics or type of vaccine," - it adds."
