Price of G. Landsbergis' transit gambling

  "While scolding Grybauskaitei that Lithuania did not have the courage to represent its position, it is very important to clarify that it should have been represented not after, but before the scandal. Lithuania should have sought stricter sanctions covering transit, but only as a joint EU decision that would be reflected in the sanctions themselves. Lithuania has not achieved this for another time it got away with unilateral actions and for another time it was left without the support of its allies in such an adventure. The same action would not be an adventure if it was achieved and accepted on behalf of the EU. There it was necessary to try and show a backbone. Failing to do that, one has to recognize the decisions of the EU where they come from is indeed the EU.

    The indignation, how can it be that Lithuania is no longer a state, but just a passing territory, is charming, but demagogic - this treatment of the borders was unconditionally accepted when the EU treaties were signed.

    In conclusion, it is necessary to name the real damage of the transit insurance history. The transit story was harmful not because Russia was provoked, but because, in the eyes of our most important partners, once again - as with the opening of the Taiwan representation - we unilaterally entered into a fight in which the entire EU and, frankly, not only wanted, but also necessary, NATO support. It is now clear that we took these actions without prior agreement with our partners and lost at least some of their trust and respect as a predictable and stable state. This is the real damage of the story. The last two years show that the Foreign Minister G.Landsbergis has never learned from such mistakes."

 

Why should G. Landbergis learn? After all, he ended up in his posts thanks to family ties. No matter what he does, nothing will happen to him. He mocks us all and the rest of the world. Let's hope that Šimonytė doesn't change her mind and will let us choose others when the time comes.
