"- Germany must be aware today that the proverbial burying of
the head in this matter is the worst strategy they can adopt here - said
Arkadiusz Mularczyk, secretary of state in the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
when asked about the issue of seeking reparations from Germany.
- Until 1989 Poland was basically a satellite state of the
Soviet Union and, without a sovereign government, it obviously could not pursue
its own sovereign international policy.
This lack of sovereignty, which we had to deal with in the People's Republic of
Poland until 1989, of course also translated into the specific case of the
failure to obtain from Germany the war damages due to us for the effects and
consequences of the Second World War we suffered - said Mularczyk in an interview
with fronda.pl, according to which after 1989, "a certain false reality
was created around a fictitious, alleged waiver by the Polish side of the
aforementioned compensation from Germany".
The new deputy minister of foreign affairs pointed out that
"in the People's Republic of Poland, there was an internal discussion on
the issue of war compensation from Germany, and publications and books on this
subject were also published." - Even in 1969, the communist government of
our country submitted to the UN something like a resolution dealing with the
subject of compensation from Germany for all the effects and consequences of
the Second World War. These actions, however, had no chance of bringing any
tangible results, because the western world was then separated from the camp of
states in which the Polish People's Republic was then located, the famous
so-called Iron curtain. Therefore, it was not in the interest of Western
countries to support the satellite countries of the Soviet Union or forcing the
Federal Republic of Germany to pay war damages, he explained.
In the opinion of the PiS politician, "after 1989,
there was a process of colonization of Poland by Germany, or more precisely by
German capital".
- German so-called soft power, through specific actions
of diplomacy, institutes established in Poland, taking over the Polish
financial and media market, and even by corrupting Polish politicians or
scientists, for example by creating appropriate grant or scholarship systems -
caused that the Polish side did not effectively raise the topic compensation
for all effects and consequences of the Second World War. For years this topic
has simply not been discussed at all - argued Mularczyk, who said that
"the consequences of these omissions continue to this day".
The government plenipotentiary for compensation for damages
caused by aggression and the German occupation in 1939-1945 noted that "a
certain discussion is beginning to emerge on the part of Germany" about
reparations. - We won't just let it go. And I am convinced that our consistent
actions will lead to a change in the position of the German government, he
announced. - Germans must be aware today that the proverbial burying of the
head in this matter is the worst strategy they can adopt here - said Arkadiusz
Mularczyk.
On Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented details
of a diplomatic note to the German government regarding compensation for
damages caused by Germany as a result of German aggression and occupation in
1939-1945. The Ministry of Diplomacy announced in a statement that in the note,
Poland is demanding compensation for material and non-material losses in the
amount of PLN 6 trillion 220 billion 609 million, as well as compensation for
the victims of German aggression and occupation and their family members for
damage and harm caused to them. "
