What the Consumer Wants

"Regarding Rep. Jim Banks's letter "Will China Dominate the U.S. Auto Market?" (March 22): Starting in the 1970s, Japanese auto makers offered well-made, lower-cost autos that Americans embraced. Eventually, foreign manufacturers built factories in the U.S. to produce cars for the American market. Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Toyota, and BMW all build hundreds of thousands of cars and employ thousands of Americans.

For decades, the American consumer has enthusiastically voted with his dollars for Chinese-made goods, a fact ignored by politicians. If China rises to a dominant position in the U.S. auto market, it will be fueled by the wholehearted support of the American consumer.
