"Jonathan Lesser and Mark Mills's op-ed is spot on concerning the Environmental Protection Agency's new carbon-dioxide emissions standard and timeline ("Can We Power the EPA's EV Fantasy?" March 27). Having spent 40 years in industry, I can assure you the EPA's goal is indeed a fantasy.
Regardless of the massive infrastructure and wealth required for future power generation and transmission, the primary obstacle will be utility power transformers. The manufacturing lead times for utility power transformers are already an Achilles' heel for U.S. grid efficiency and security.
The U.S. doesn't have the manufacturing capacity to hit the 2032 target. Manufacturing lead times for high voltage transformers are up to two years and will increase. You have to wonder if the EPA bureaucrats who come up with these unachievable goals are making emotional decisions without conferring with technical experts.
