“A Saudi ship was attacked in the Red Sea, Riyadh’s state media reported on Thursday. Earlier, the Tehran-backed Houthi rebels said they were attacking tankers in the waterway, which could open a new front in the US-Iran conflict.

 

The Houthis have threatened to block Saudi ports on the Red Sea, which are important for oil exports, especially now that the Strait of Hormuz has been largely closed for five months due to war.

 

The Houthis said they attacked the Saudi tankers “Encelia” and “Layla” in the Red Sea with missiles and drones.

 

The captain of the tanker reported that an unknown projectile had hit the vessel about 70 nautical miles southwest of Al Shukaik, according to the UKMTO, and the crew was extinguishing a fire on board. Saudi Arabia confirmed that the Encelia had been hit, but did not report any other tanker.

 

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Thursday it had seized three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. It said it controlled the strait and warned that any ship attempting to pass through without Iran’s permission would face the same fate.”
