Record Numbers Suffering from Mental Illness

“More than a billion people worldwide are affected by mental illness.

This is reported by an international team of researchers in *The Lancet*. The data, covering 204 countries, date from 2023—shortly after the Covid pandemic.

According to the findings, the number of diagnoses has doubled since 1990, reaching 1.2 billion.

Anxiety disorders and depression are the most common conditions.

The increase was particularly sharp in these categories, rising by 158 percent and 131 percent, respectively.

Eating disorders and schizophrenia are comparatively rare, yet they too have seen an increase.

Young people under the age of 40—and teenagers in particular—are especially affected.

Women are affected more frequently, with the exception of autism and ADHD.

In terms of population, the highest rates of mental health conditions are found in wealthy countries.

The rate is lowest in Vietnam and highest in the Netherlands.

Data from poorer countries was less reliable. Germany is one of the few countries with a high treatment rate of over 30 percent. The analysis is part of the ‘Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors’ research project. Kuro” [1]
