"There are huge peat fields in the Šilutė district. They are owned by UAB Klasmann Deilmann Šilutė, which has been operating for many years and is one of the largest employers in the region. The company is engaged in the production of peat substrates. The company manager says that the company has recently been hit hard by the conflict between Lithuania and China, where a lot of money was lost, and even today there is a slowdown in the markets, with sales down about 20 percent."This is due to geopolitics, consumption has decreased. Our company also traded with China, we exported there, and the previous conflict cost us 400 containers that were stuck. This cost us 4 million Eur. From December, 2021, we have completely stopped exporting from Lithuania to China and we are not doing it until now. Our sales to China in Šilutė amounted to about 15 percent. Now we serve that market from other countries, other divisions of the group, but they don't have such capabilities, so our competitors from Latvia and Estonia took a share," he says.
