Ignore the climate crisis - this is exactly what
Western elites are doing. Explanation - they have to give jobs to their
subordinates. Even if these jobs are bullshit jobs, that are bringing only waste
and disaster to humanity. They have to grow their military to bring
"democracy" and "happiness" to some countries of their interest. They have to
stop the development of China, Africa and South America just to keep
previous order in the world. Climate crisis? What do you mean by the climate
crisis? In the meantime Global South is adapting sustainable economy.
"The world has recently been changing ever more rapidly, driven by global warming. But people don't seem to care much. This will not solve climate change.
Perhaps people's forgetfulness is their greatest weakness in dealing with the climate crisis. Or perhaps it is their inner salvation. The climate certainly doesn't forget. Every year, including in 2024, a lot is added to the mountain of emissions. Every year the atmosphere continues to change, the world as we know it becomes a little less stable. And people? They are increasingly forgetting heat waves, droughts, floods and storms. They are ignoring how vulnerable they and their economies have become due to climate change. Key words: water shortages, food prices. Nevertheless, many people are asking: is that it? Some are also asking: is there more to come? The clear answer from science, especially after this year, is: unfortunately yes, unfortunately a lot.
Climate change can no longer be described as subtle. Nevertheless, people, including politicians, are still carried away by the fantasy that we are on a path that will keep us below the 1.5 or 2 degrees of global warming targeted in the Paris Climate Agreement over the next few decades. This year, however, we have already reached well over 1.5 degrees. According to all serious calculations, three degrees by the end of the century is realistic. And 2024 and the year before clearly demonstrated what a few tenths of a degree more means. As a reminder: record heat waves from Europe to Antarctica, a series of unprecedented floods around the globe, hurricanes and forest fires fueled by marine heat waves, a catastrophic record for the history books. For now, until the next report.
More anomalies than ever
Never before have meteorologists recorded as many anomalies and all-time records as in these two years. What had happened? Clearly, warming has accelerated by a few tenths of a degree. In geological terms, global warming has escalated in fractions of a second. A mystery. Was it El Niño, the recurring climate phenomenon that periodically leads to heat anomalies? Or was it the water vapor that was catapulted into the atmosphere by a historic volcanic eruption in the ocean? Or even the sun, which is cyclically moving towards a new radiation maximum? Perhaps even a paradoxical environmental protection effect: fewer sulfur-containing pollutants in the air that form clouds and therefore normally have a cooling effect? The latest data show that everything could play a role, but even together they are not enough to explain the temperature jump.
The uncertainty among researchers that this recent temperature jump has triggered can hardly be underestimated. Because the question arises: has an important factor been forgotten? And if so: what does this mean for the future, for the many emissions scenarios and climate projections that are used to govern and manage the world? There is no definitive answer to this yet. So far, at least, the climate models have worked excellently. They have reconstructed the physical processes that influence the temperature curve almost flawlessly. This is especially true for the period in which our fossil emissions became the dominant factor. But it is also clear that climate research often tends to underestimate the dynamics rather than overestimate them.
A previously little-noticed feedback effect in the climate system could have caused two tenths of a degree of additional warming in the past two years. In short: global warming itself is apparently reducing low, bright clouds. This means that more solar radiation and thus energy reaches the surface and, above all, the oceans. This effect would also explain why warming rates have not only increased linearly with emissions in recent years, but tend to increase more quickly.
So is it conceivable that the crisis has already intensified itself, as has often been predicted? Possibly yes. Many uncertainties remain, not least the all-important one: how much we will emit in the future. In any case, more and more experts are losing optimism and are "slowly becoming really nervous," as the Potsdam climatologist Johan Rockström recently admitted publicly. In fact, there is only one reason left for scientists to argue cautiously: our need for inner hygiene. Hopelessness and fantasies of doom have a psychological - and political - effect like delirium. They are counterproductive and only lead to further repression and forgetting. But cognitive lameness will certainly not be able to cope with the logic of climate change in the future."
