"About 30 migrants have set up a temporary camp inside Belarus, near the Polish village of Usnazh Gurn. They are being guarded by Belarusian officials on the one hand and by Polish officials on the other.
"We call on the Polish authorities to aid, ”said Christine Goyer, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokeswoman in Poland.
"Under the 1951 Refugee Convention, which Poland is a signatory to, asylum seekers should never be punished, even for illegally crossing the border," said Ch. Goyer. The UNHCR said it was "concerned about alarming reports of a group of several dozen people" at the border and added that they were thought to be from Afghanistan and Iraq and may need medical assistance and international protection.
Polish authorities intend to build a border on the Belarusian border, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said on Monday.
Mr Blaszczak also said on Monday that he was sending a report to prosecutors about the famous communist-era dissident Wladyslaw Frasyniuk, who had criticized Polish soldiers stationed at the border. Mr Frasyniuk said Polish soldiers were not behaving humanely at the border and accused them of behaving in a "gang of dogs".
In Warsaw, about two dozen protesters locked themselves to a fence in front of the headquarters of the border guard service and hung barbed wire on its gates. In this way, they protested against the behavior of Polish officials at the border."
