"The market for autonomous AI agents is growing.
Perplexity and Elon Musk have just announced their projects. Thanks to the
merger of his automotive company and the startup that built Grok, the latter
will challenge Microsoft.
The development of artificial intelligence is entering the
phase of autonomous systems capable of independently performing complex tasks.
The backdrop for this market revolution is the recently
announced "Personal Computer" project. The project, led by
Perplexity, involves using Mac mini computers with Apple Silicon processors as
local, 24/7 AI nodes. This cloud-separated architecture is intended to
guarantee security and privacy, solving the problem of sending sensitive
corporate data to external servers.
However, it is Elon Musk's latest initiative that is
generating the most excitement today.
A Revolutionary Agent Based on Grok
The billionaire announced on Platform X that Tesla and his
private startup xAI have officially joined forces on the groundbreaking
"Macrohard" project [1]. This play on words is no coincidence,
referring to Microsoft.
Musk is developing an advanced system for autonomously
controlling computers and independently performing office tasks in real time.
The agent will therefore undermine the leader in the office software market.
This is not surprising, as the company founded by Bill Gates is a major
investor in Musk's biggest competitor, OpenAI, led by Sam Altman.
The Tesla CEO detailed the two-layer architecture of the new
solution, also known as "Digital Optimus," comparing it to the
dual-process theory of the human brain. Grok, a powerful large language model
(LLM) developed by xAI, is intended to serve as System 2 in this system. It
will play the role of the main conductor and navigator responsible for
conscious reasoning and understanding the world. System 1 is designed to almost
instinctively process and execute specific actions. The mechanism will base its
operations solely on the lightning-fast analysis of the last five seconds of
video from the computer screen, seamlessly taking over control of keyboard and
mouse movements.
Will Digital Optimus lead the company?
From a technological perspective, the system is fully based
on Tesla's innovative AI4 chip, priced by the manufacturer at just $650. It
will be supported by the very economical use of much more expensive computing
infrastructure from Nvidia, owned by xAI. According to Musk, the right
combination of computing power from both entities will ultimately allow Digital
Optimus to essentially "simulate the company's entire operations" in
the near future.
The timing of the announcement of the AI business merger is
no coincidence. As Business Insider recently revealed, key work on the
Macrohard project at xAI has practically stalled due to significant staffing
disruptions (following a sudden hiring freeze, the suspension of 600 external
contractors, and the resignation of 20 chief engineers). In February, Toby
Pohlen was appointed head of the project. However, the longtime manager
resigned after just 16 days. Furthermore, as Fortune reports, more than half of
the 12 original founding members of xAI have already left the company. Experts
believe the announcement of the Macrohard project is a clear attempt to save
face and the project itself. However, this is not sitting well with investors.
In 2024, they filed a lawsuit against Musk for breach of fiduciary duty, accusing
him of unlawfully transferring engineers, expensive equipment, and key
resources from Tesla directly to his private startup. Additionally, the
automotive giant invested as much as $2 billion in innovative xAI, despite
shareholders decisively rejecting the idea in last year's vote.”
1. "Digital Optimus" (also referred to as
"Macrohard"), a joint AI project between Tesla and xAI, is currently
in development and is expected to start rolling out to AI4-equipped Tesla
vehicles in approximately six months (as of March 2026). It is designed to act
as an AI agent for computer-based tasks.
Availability and Cost
·
Availability: It is scheduled for release in roughly six months and will
function on Tesla vehicles equipped with AI4 (Hardware 4) technology. It is
also being deployed at select Supercharger stations.
· Cost: While
the underlying AI4 hardware is reported to cost approximately $650, there is no
finalized public price for the Digital Optimus software subscription or
service.
· Capabilities: The system uses xAI's Grok
to analyze the last five seconds of screen, keyboard, and mouse activity to
perform tasks.
