U.S. News: Light Touch Proposed For AI Regulation

“The White House released a set of legislative recommendations to shape U.S. artificial intelligence policy, outlining a framework that favors light-touch regulation over comprehensive state-level laws.

The plan stresses the White House preference for Congress to rely on existing laws where possible and to avoid creating new rules or agencies to oversee the development of the emerging technology. Some of the most difficult legal issues around AI development should be left to the courts, it said, and sector-specific regulators should work with businesses where possible to solve issues.

The proposal is largely designed to accelerate domestic AI development by pre-empting some state-level rules and creating "sandboxes" for AI experimentation, while stressing that states should retain some of their traditional powers in areas such as consumer protection and child safety.

The brief document includes specific references to child protection, workforce development, establishing a federal framework for AI development, and issues around copyright protection, as well as less-defined areas such as preventing censorship of political viewpoints and providing grants to small businesses to develop AI tools.
