"Now, when
farmers' protests are taking place, and in addition, the European Parliament
elections are in front of us, the European Union does not want to publicly discuss
the prospects related to the admission of new members. This is written on the
portal "RBK-Ukraine", according to the information published by
"Politico".
Forced to compete
with cheap imports from Ukraine, farmers feel trapped in a desperate
struggle and doomed to failure, and are particularly shocked by high fuel
prices and Brussels' environmental standards.
European leaders
are agreeing to compromises to appease farmers and are barely talking about the
expansion of the bloc, bearing in mind that the EU elections are only 3 months
away.
Several EU
diplomats say that in preparation for the final integration of Ukraine,
Moldova, as well as several countries in the Western Balkans, efforts are being
made not to discuss it, as such talk would cause indignation among farmers.
"Let's be
honest: with European elections coming up, nobody wants to talk about
[enlargement]. Talk of cutting subsidies for European farmers is by no means
something anyone would want to write down as their election campaign slogan. In
addition, it can become electoral ammunition for the extreme right," said
one EU diplomat.
European
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who plans to continue in her current
position, has promised to prepare the bloc for Ukraine. In September 2023, she
said it was an issue that needed to be resolved now if we were to feel ready
for tomorrow, and called on Europe to think in broader terms and ruin its own
destiny.
Herculean task
The task related
to the integration of Ukraine is extremely complex. The country
would become the EU member with the largest territory, and Kyiv's influence on
the European Parliament and the EU Council would be quite significant.
The GDP of
Ukraine, which became a member of the bloc, would be one of the lowest, and
this circumstance would particularly affect the EU's cohesion policy. If the
integration of Ukraine were to take place, it would mean that the country would
receive about 186 billion euros in 7 years from EU funds, but the rest of the
EU countries would have to pay more and receive less as a result.
The bloc decided
that preparations for the final integration of Ukraine, Moldova, Sakartvel and
the six Western Balkan countries must take place within the country and not in
public, Politico writes.
The publication
also notes that during the upcoming summit, European leaders should not discuss
the topic of the bloc's development: It is planned to simply discuss the tasks
ahead.
According to some
officials, the real negotiations on enlargement will not begin until after the
elections. At the end of June, European leaders will sign the so-called
strategic agenda for the next European Commission, which is very much related
to internal reforms. It is expected that Poland, which will hold the presidency
of the EU Council in 2025, could start talks about expansion.
Polish farmers
continue to block truck traffic. There are many difficulties when crossing the
border, both for those going to Ukraine and Poland.
Polish farmers
continue to block roads at six checkpoints.
March 5 Polish
farmers announced that the protest at the border with Ukraine will continue
until April 30, but on March 10. one of the points was blocked off for a
while."
