"Finland: The criticism of the Prime Minister's party video
is growing.
Critics accuse Sanna Marin of violating her duties as Prime
Minister while partying. Marin replies that she is always willing to work. She
has also passed a drug test.
Sanna Marin has already received applause for pictures from
her private life. They were pictures intended for the public, at festivals or
with her husband. However, after a private video by the Finnish Prime Minister
that was not intended for the public was distributed, she has had to defend
herself against widespread criticism for days. What may seem strange at first
has become politically threatening for her - so threatening that she has
already taken a drug test. Ultimately, the question is whether she was always
ready to fulfill her duties.
The video shows Marin at a party with friends. She dances so
exuberantly that one could assume she was intoxicated.
Speculations spread
quickly. Another video surfaced over the weekend showing Marin dancing closely
with a Finnish singer. The 36-year-old Marin has been married to a former
Finnish second division soccer player for two years and they have a child
together.
The first video went viral on social media. In addition to
statements by some who found it a good thing that a head of government was able
to enjoy her private life, serious allegations were made.
There had previously
been controversy over Marin's understanding of the office. She was criticized
last summer when the high cost of her breakfast was revealed - she finally
offered to pay for it.
Security threat to the country?
The question has now been raised as to whether Marin might
have breached her duties as prime minister. The recordings should come from a
weekend in early August when Marin was not on vacation and no replacement was
planned.
The leader of the opposition Christian Democrats, Sari Essayah,
expressed concern that Marin's behavior might pose a security threat to the
country. The security situation is tense, Finland shares a 1,300-kilometer
border with Russia and wants to become a member of NATO. In the past few
months, Marin had managed to persuade the country to apply for membership
without any major dispute. Marin should explain herself before Parliament,
Essayah said.
After all, Marin spoke to the press on Friday, spoke of
serious allegations and announced that she had taken a drug test. The result is
expected this week. She said she had never used drugs in her life. No
government appointments were scheduled that weekend and she had not done
anything illegal with her friends. "I'm always ready to work." The
other video also shows only two dancing friends.
From the ranks of her coalition partners it was assured that
Marin continues to enjoy the confidence. Her finance minister, Annika Saarikko
from the Center Party, said it was a bit embarrassing to see Marin's activities as she did
in the video. As for the prime minister's availability, she was satisfied with
Marin's statement. However, according to Saarikko on the Yle broadcaster, the
government was summoned at very short notice. It was pointed out that the news
of the Russian special operation in Ukraine also came very early in the morning.” [1]
