If Biden's idea to accept Ukraine to NATO started the events, what will do the idea of NATO boots on the ground in Ukraine?
“President Trump welcomed European leaders and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, and there was some good news even before the closed-door discussions began. To wit, Mr. Trump said publicly for the first time that the U.S. will participate in providing security guarantees to Ukraine as part of a peace agreement with Russia.
A reporter asked Mr. Trump whether he'd rule out U.S. troops as part of a security guarantee to deter further depredations from Vladimir Putin. "There's going to be a lot of help," Mr. Trump said. "They are first line of defense because they're there. They're Europe. But we're going to help them out also. We'll be involved." The Europeans "want to give protection. They feel very strongly about it, and we'll help them out with that."
Mr. Trump offered no specifics and the details will matter. But Mr. Trump conspicuously declined to exclude American support, and this is welcome realism about what it will take to gain a durable peace in Ukraine. Also notable is that Mr. Trump said that he isn't looking for a peace accord that only lasts two years. He wants something that lasts -- which means a deal that offers a credible deterrent for Mr. Putin not to restart the war after he has a chance to rearm.
For such a security promise to be credible, the U.S. will have to be involved in more than a token way. That would at minimum include intelligence sharing, perhaps more complements of aircraft deployed to the region, and assistance with rearming Ukraine and building up Kyiv's military.
All of this wouldn't be popular with some of Mr. Trump's most ardent supporters who loathe Ukraine and want the U.S. out of Europe. But Mr. Trump sincerely wants to end the conflict, as he promised in the campaign, and perhaps he's persuaded that the U.S. has to step up with the Europeans.
It's notable how much the Europeans praised Mr. Trump for making the effort to end the conflict. Mr. Putin will have to see that an alliance of nations with more military power and will is on Ukraine's side. Mr. Trump is moving in the right direction when he tacitly acknowledges that America has a strong interest in a peaceful Ukraine and stable Europe.” [1]
