Vilnius University Advertisement: High-quality and reliable knowledge is available not only to students – VU invites you to become a free listener

“Would you like to learn creative writing with the famous author Rimantas Kmita, or maybe deepen your knowledge of psychology? Vilnius University (VU) offers such opportunities, inviting you to become a free listener. This is a unique opportunity to choose lectures that interest you and broaden your horizons while learning together with students. Anyone with a secondary education can become a free listener, regardless of age, previous studies or experience.

“Free listeners are people who come or return to the university to improve their competences or acquire new ones. As a university, we strive to create conditions for a wide variety of people to meet here – with different professional paths, experiences and goals. We want everyone to be able to shape their own learning trajectory, and we could offer what suits or interests them the most,” says VU Vice-Rector for Studies Assoc. Prof. Valdas Jaskūnas.

A person wishing to become a listener can choose one or more modules from various modules offered in different faculties of VU. From creative writing, taught by VU partnership associate professor, author of the novel “Pietinia kronikas” R. Kmita, criminology at the Faculty of Philosophy to negotiation speech at the Kaunas Faculty and entrepreneurship at the Business School – such study subjects are offered by VU to anyone wishing to become a free listener. You can find more information about the modules here. If you have not found a suitable module for you, contact the faculty – they will provide you with information about the opportunities that interest you. VU provides the opportunity to choose modules as a listener in all faculties.

The opportunity to become a free listener is made twice a year. Admission to the autumn semester is carried out by September 1, and to the spring semester – by February 1. The free listener agreement is signed for one semester or the selected number of study modules. The agreement is valid from the beginning of the module being studied until the end of the term for retaking exams and final reviews. The student is not obliged to pay for the subject being studied, but the academic certificate is issued only after successfully completing the subject and paying for it.

Those wishing to conclude a free listener agreement must fill out an application at the faculty where they intend to choose a study module. Upon receiving the application, the faculty will contact them regarding signing and payment of the agreement.

The tuition fee for the selected subject (module) is calculated by multiplying the price of one credit, specified in the study agreement, by the number of credits of that subject. The price of one credit may vary in different faculties. The exact price, subject description or other information is provided by the faculty where the lectures are organized. VU alumni who have chosen study modules at the Kaunas or Law Faculties, Business School, are granted a 10 percent discount.

A listener is a person who concludes an agreement with VU in order to study individual subjects or modules from the study programs being implemented. Anyone with secondary education can become a free listener. There are no restrictions on age, field of education or previous studies.

A free listener contract does not grant student status and the right to use student benefits and state support.”
